Roscoe
Born June 3rd 1929 near Shade Ohio
The little house where I was born was still standing when I
visited Ohio in 2008. It was owned by my Uncle Roy and Dora Goldsberry. I do not
know how long we lived there but I believe not for very long cause as I under
stand we moved to Darwin then to Glouster and then to Murray city Ohio. Wish I
knew how old I was when we arrived to Murray city. I know I had a brother and
sister by then. Roy and Ellen.
The house we lived in in Murray city was a Square house with
four rooms with a slate roof that cane to a point.
The kitchen and livening room were on one side and two bedrooms on the other
side. The kitchen was a little smaller to make the living room larger. There was
a single fireplace that had openings on both sides one in living room and
the other in the bed room. The other bedroom had no heat where us kids shared.
As little kids we shared the same bed. I can remember four of us in same bed,
two girls at top of bed and two boys at the bottom.
Murray City had two schools one was 3 grades and the other was 4 thru 12.
I went through 7 and we moved to Lancaster and dropped out of School in the 10th
grade which was a mistake. Went to work in the Battery factory, worked there
till the end of the second world war, A veteran came back took his job back
which I had filled for a while. During this times I also got acquainted with
Eugene Francis Ross whom I think made a man out of me. He taught me farming and
taking care of animals. I took Animal Husbandry in the ninth grade.
Backing up a bit in the eighth and ninths grade I had been doing
some odd jobs like picking straw berries , Cadding at the golf course and
setting pins at the bowling alley.
I got the urge to travel so I hitched hiked to California a couple of times on
different routes going and coming back to Lancaster Ohio.
I worked at the Terminal Grill at the Y where Columbus and Broad
streets meet in the south end of Lancaster.
The restaurant was owned by Mr. Staplant which made a waiter and a fry cook out of
me. I worked there for a while.
There were 4 of us working there 2 boys and 2 girls and we made a great team and
we all enjoyed our work. I just wish I could remember there names. I was a pipe
smoker and I couldn't lay my pipe down cause the girls would put kina pepper in
it. On Sat we had to work late because a group of the wealthily would come in
for a knight cap. Some times it was 3 am before we got out of there. When I
got a chance to use my fathers car Billy and I would take the girls to Buckeye Lake and swim out a little Island and sleep till the sin came up. Mister
Stapleant found out what we were doing and let us use his cabin and his boats.
We really had some fun now. Now there never any hanky panky, we just good
buddies. Well that was some great times but time changes things.
Pete The cook and manager of terminal grill bought the Spot Lunch restaurant
over on the east side of Lancaster near the Anchor Hocking glass Co entrance.
Well Pete got hold of me through friends and offered half again
in wages to go to work for him.
Hadn't got a raise at the terminal grill and wasn't going to get one so I quit
and went to the Spot Lunch.
Had to work harder and faster but it was great when you got in the swing of
things, the days went faster.
On lunch breaks at A H people came in by the dozens for food.
Didn't take long to make a lot of new friends there. ( To bad I cant remember
Pets last name)
Spot lunch is where I met my first girl friend that I would
marry.
Well made one really good one, Quit the Spot Lunch and went to
work for him.
His name was Roy Shull He owned the west side Shell station.
Well that was a pretty good move, Roy was pretty good to me he taught me a
lot about servicing automobiles
handling customers. Lots to say during this period but will say this now,
When I got out of the army I went right to work with Standers Stations of
California in Tacoma WA.
I have to give Roy a lot of credit for stirring me in the right direction in my
life. Roy also called square dances.
One day while working at Roy's Shell Station my mother an father
drove up from Rock Bridge to give Draft papers for the Koran war.
Those paper gave me three days to get my stuff together. A bus was to pick me up
on the fourth morning and take me to Columbus and Fort Hayes. I Was induction
into the US Army February 3 1951
At that time I owned some furniture and didn't know what to do with it,
Well I stopped by the Terminal grill to say good bye to mister Stapleton. during
our conversation my furniture came up. Mister Stapleton said well bring your furniture
up to my place and store in my garage until you get back home. That was very
kind of him after I left the Terminal Grill to go to go to the Spot Lunch
restaurant.
At this time I was leaving behind a girl I loved Dee Ann M. She
sent me off with a beautiful silver bracelet and her class ring which she was
proud of.
Well here comes the sad part Dee Ann called me at Fort Lewis WA to wish me a
merry Christmas. well one of my buddies was C Q whom took the call.
The smart ass he was told her I was on my way to Oregon to spend Christmas with
a girl friend. It was several days before I found about the call.
I tried calling Dee but didn't get through so I got leave as soon as I could and
flew home but it was to late, Dee had ran away her mother said.
I was pretty busy training in 1951 but I did get out to the roller rink
once in a while, Skated with several girls but never dated. I was in love, Oh
well
I moped around for a while but was still roller skating every
chance I could, sometimes two times a week when we were on base. Fort Lewis.
A girl Libby Davis I skated with quiet a lot found out that Dee Ann was history.
One night while we were skating she said to me I would like for you to meet my
Sister.
Libby brought her to the rink the next evening of skating and I wasn't there. I
was on maneuvers. The next time I went to the roller rink she was there. her
name was Jeanie, She had two little girls and just divorced. We Skater a couple
of times and Libby took her home. A week or so later I met her in Babes restaurant
which I stopped in often when I went to Tacoma. This one evening I walked into
Babes and the waitress said there is a lady in the other room that's wants to
see you. I said to myself who in hell could that be. i went in there and there
was Jeanie having a drink and a cigarette Which I found out later she never did
very much of. Any way sat and chatted for a while and decided to go for a walk.
we talked about my army life and about her being a meat cutter and her
busy life with two kids. I walked her to the bus and off she went. I did not see
her for to or three weeks When Libby Got hold of another Soldier which found me
and gave me a note inviting me to a family dinner. I did go and there were
twenty five or more there. I got to meet Jeanie's girls as well as her six
sisters. I had a very good time there that day. When I left Jeanie said I hope
to see you again. A couple of weeks later I had nothing to do or no place to go
so I called her if she wanted to go to Point Defiance Park and she sad Y yes but
I want to bring the girls. So we did and had a great time. The Girls were 4 and
5.
After that I guess I left Ohio behind. I visited family a few
times but never had the urge to live there anymore. Have some great memories
growing up there though. I am sure I will write about them though.
Honesty
Was hitch hiking across country and hadn't eaten n a couple of days
and was walking through a little town Missouri and there was a bakery that had
some fresh bread airing out on a shelf on a side of the building Well I was
thinking of grabbing of one of those loaf's and running of with it. Well I had a
dime in my pocket, I took that dime out of my pocket and looked at it and was
wondering what I could buy for it. Was sure it wasn't going to buy one of those
loafs of bread. After a few minutes I decided to go into the bakery and see what
I could by for a dine. Well when I went in the bakery the backer handed me
a loaf of bread and said keep your dime and have a good day. He must have been
watching me. Could have ate that bread right away but it lasted for two days. I
carried that dime in my pocket for years.
This is on my mind today October

While shaking up with Sally one
evening her son Dan came home with his girlfriend who was bringing a container
with a lizard in it. Sally was screaming like crazy I don’t want that thing in
my house. The girl wasn’t paying any attention to sally so took the aquarium
from the girl and threw it out the door. When I took the aquarium from the girl
she climbed on my back kicking me as I was heading for the door.
Dan stood by and did nothing to stop her from bring the thing into the house.
Well they left the house and I went outside and cleaned up the mess.
In a little while here comes the sheriff. We had just set down when he got an
emergency call so he took the call and came back in an hour.
He took his report and left. Several days later I receive a warrant with a court
date. I was ready to go to court on my own and take whatever they did to me.
Sally and I are talking about it one evening and she said I am going to
get you a lawyer. She went to a law firm in Seattle
which sent a guy out to defend me in court. I was to have jewery trial.
I go to trial and my lawyer shows up late and aperies to be drunk.
It took the jury about 15 minutes to convict me. Sally paid the law firm $2000.
I got off easy, I paid some court costs. And have a record for 5years. The thing
that hurt me the worst was years later I went to buy a 410 shot gun I wasn’t
able to buy one because of that indict.
I am still with sally Cant quiet re member what year
this happened 93
94 Tried best to forget it.
